Gaining too little or too much weight can lead to various complications. Insufficient weight gain can increase the risk of Preterm birth: Babies born too early may face significant health challenges and developmental issues.
Excessive weight gain can increase the risk of, gestational diabetes: A type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy, which can lead to complications for both mother and baby. Another risk is preeclampsia: A serious blood pressure disorder that can occur during pregnancy. Another complication of excessive weight gain is the risk of babies born to mothers with excessive weight gain are at a higher risk of becoming overweight or obese later in life.The recommended amount of weight gain during pregnancy is highly individualised and primarily depends on your Body Mass Index (BMI) before pregnancy.Your healthcare provider will monitor your weight gain at each prenatal visit to ensure you are on a healthy track, tracking not just the total number but the pattern and timing of your weight gain throughout each trimester. This personalised monitoring allows us to catch any concerning patterns early whether you are gaining too quickly, too slowly or experiencing sudden changes that might indicate complications like gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.
